THE "FRANCIACORTA" TERRITORY
Our farm is situated in Franciacorta: anyone who knows this splendid territory or has only heard about it will understand straight away how proud and contented we are to work among the hills of Franciacorta and to welcome our guests and visitors to the scenic beauties of this territory.
Franciacorta is a hilly area which covers various municipalities in Brescia province, situated around the southern area of Lake Iseo (or Lake Serbino). In alphabetical order, these municipalities are: Adro, Capriolo, Castegnato, Cazzago San Martino, Cellatica, Coccaglio, Cologne, Corte Franca, Erbusco, Gussago, Iseo, Monticelli Brusati, Ome, Ospitaletto, Paderno Franciacorta, Palazzolo sull'Oglio, Paratico, Passirano, Provaglio d'Iseo, Rodengo-Saiano and Rovato.
The name “Franciacorta” derives from “franca curtis” or “free court” – a territory which was in ancient times free from taxes, as this area was settled by Benedictine monks dedicated to reclaiming swampy land and enhancing it.
Today Franciacorta has become really famous well beyond its boundaries, not only for the scenic beauty of its hills and the presence of Lake Iseo, but above all thanks to its celebrated wines which are known and exported throughout the world. The sparkling wines in particular are among the most sought after internationally.
It is in fact this suitability as a wine growing area, along with the ancient reclamation work, that has made this into an area with a wealth of top class wineries, often situated on terracing on the hillsides, making the name Franciacorta a quality trade mark recognized and appreciated everywhere so that Franciacorta is often compared with the French Champagne region.
